It was this park where ‘Project Tiger’ was inaugurated in India. The rich biodiversity of this reserve is partly attributed to the variety of habitat found here. Due to the location of the reserve in the foothills of the central Himalayas, both Himalayan and peninsular flora and fauna are found in the reserve.

Bandhavgarh has been the center of human activity and settlement for over 2000 years and there are references to it in the ancient books: The Narad-Panch Ratra and the Shiva Purana. The oldest sign of habitation in the park are caves dug into the sandstone to the north of the fort. Several contain Brahmi inscriptions dating from the 1st century B.C. With time, Bandhavgarh became more and more deserted until the forest overran the area and it became the royal hunting reserve. Post India’s Independence, Bandhavgarh was transformed into a National Park in 1968. After the park was created, poaching and hunting were brought under control and the number of animals rose dramatically. The number of tigers prospered and the 1986 extension provided much-needed forest to accommodate them.
