Nagaland is regarded as the land of festivals and each December, the Hornbill Festival takes place in Kohima uniting the many Naga tribes for a yearly celebration of the culture and traditions of the region. Famed for its ferocious and distinct Naga Warriors, Nagaland is a must-see for tourists in India’s North East and for the first time Aarav & Aadhya is presenting a guided tour of this unique annual event, paired with a 7 night excursion along the great Brahmaputra River. We have 2 special departures sailing on the 22nd November 2025 & 29th November 2025, the best way to experience the once-in-a-lifetime event and experience North East India with Aarav & Aadhya. This is a group tour exploring the Hornbill Festival throughout numerous days after a 10-night Brahmaputra expedition. Transportation to and from the festival site and excursions each day are provided as a group by coach or car but our local guides and cars will be on hand to accompany anyone who choose to return early. This is a flexible tour which may modify depending on specific festival activities at time of visit or group consensus.
Once you have completed the airport procedures, proceed to the exit area after arriving at Guwahati airport. Head to Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, after meeting our Guide You will travel through Assam's lush plains and famous tea garden before arriving at Kohima, the stunning capital of Nagaland, surrounded by several Eastern Himalayan ranges. After the lengthy drive, settle into your accommodation and unwind. Get ready for the lengthy journey to Hornbill tomorrow.
You
will visit Kisama Heritage Village on your second day to see the Hornbill
Festival's vibrant opening ceremony. This area is called the "Festival of
Festivals" and aims to preserve, conserve, and promote Naga customs,
culture, and legacy. Take as many photos as you like and enjoy the opening
ceremony.
To
participate in the Hornbill Festival celebrations, you will travel back to the
Kisama Heritage Village Festival Ground today. The festival will reflect the rich
history of the tribes through traditional performances and enactments today.
Access to the tribes' delectable cuisine is another benefit of the festival.
You're going to Kohima Cathedral later in the evening. This is the principal
cathedral in the Nagaland diocese. In contrast to other churches, Mary Help of
Christians Cathedral is built in the traditional Naga house style rather than
the Gothic style.
After
finishing your delectable breakfast, you will travel to the town of Khonoma,
known as Asia's first green village. The World War II cemetery here is one of
the most important reminders of the bloodiest, most devastating, and most
ruthless wars in history. You will thereafter be given a tour of Khonoma's medieval
village, where you will see the unspoiled natural beauty and the way of life of
the locals.
After
breakfast today, the journey will get even more thrilling. You will be driven
towards Mokochung, farther into Nagaland. The AoNagas and their culture can be
found in this isolated Naga town, which boasts breathtaking natural beauty. The
mythology, tales, and valor of the native tribes have made the rural areas
surrounding Mokochung famous.
We visit the fascinating Ungma and Mokochungbasti today. These are the settlements in Naga where the native tribes live. As you explore the villages, pay close attention to what your local guide has to say. He would tell the wonderful tales of these towns' cultures and way of life today. Explore the winding streets and pay close attention to these vibrant settlements.
You will be taken to Lungwa village, one of the most isolated areas of Nagaland today. The Mon district has the head-hunter territory of Lungwa village. Since this community is so remote from modern conveniences, visitors cannot access any technology. Here, the main priorities are enjoying yourself and living contentedly with whatever you own. Tourists visiting this community will undoubtedly be amazed at how content people can be without a fundamental convenience like electricity.
The
excursion will be very thrilling today. Approach the village where the
remaining headhunters reside and seize the chance to speak with them. You will
communicate with them using our local guides, so don't worry about the
language. Learn about the taboos surrounding these headhunters. Consider the
precise moment when they would cut off their adversaries' heads and carry them
back to their town, where celebrations were in store.
Visit the Konyak Nagas' Angh (King) later in the day. The two nations of India and Myanmar share this king's residence. The Myanmar side of the palace is off-limits to the general public, and only the king is permitted to sit there. You can always see it from a distance, though. We are going to walk up to the pillar that divides Myanmar and India. Following today's fascinating and exhausting journey, you will be taken back to your Naga hotel.
You will return to the Assamese plains today after touring all of these undiscovered areas of Nagaland. Arrive in Jorhat in the late afternoon. Afterward, you will tour the ancient sites of the kingdom of Ahom. This kingdom began to prosper in the 13th century along the banks of the Brahmaputra. It effectively fought the powerful Mughals into the northeast and kept its independence for 600 years.
This
fantastic journey is over. This morning, you will be driven from Jorhat to
Guwahati. You can stop and take pictures in the most picturesque locations, but
make sure you get to Guwahati before dusk. Arrive on time, board your aircraft,
and return home with lifelong memories.
